Ethan Allen Club Scholarship Program
What began as a friendly round of golf has turned into an annual event that is benefiting students from all over Chittenden County.
In 1992 four friends got together for there weekly round of golf. What happened that day has given many high school students in this community who excel in athletics, as a student, and/or as a citizen the opportunity to compete for scholarship money toward a higher education.
The friends, Dave Holton, Billy OBrien, Randy Miller and Mike Corley were just looking for a way to help out the Ethan Allen Club and the local community when the idea of a member-funded scholarship arose. What grew from that idea is now considered by many as the Hiessman Trophy of Chittenden County.
Each year the schools in Chittenden County send information about their best students to the scholarship committee. From the information received the founders of the scholarship pick the winners based on the applicants athletic achievements, educational achievements or the applicants contributions to the community.
26 male and female winners are chosen from all of the applicants. A dinner is held at the Ethan Allen Club for the winners and their families. At the dinner Tom Brennan, immediate past coach of the UVM Mens Basketball team, honors the achievements of the 26 winners. Each of the 26 winners receives a trophy and the prestigious distinction of becoming members of the EAC All-American Team.
Once all winners are celebrated the scholarship committee picks the male and female from the 26 winners that best exemplifies the goals of the scholarship. These two individuals each receive a check for higher education.
